Building

The building that encompasses the Back When Cafe is more than 100 years old and is one of the oldest buildings in downtown Wausau. In fact the original ceiling can still be seen today. It was discovered during a remodeling project in 2003 when a lower ceiling that had been installed during the 1960's was removed. This renovation project also included many improvements to the buildings' exterior; rebricking, new outdoor lighting and a new window scheme to return the look of the building to its historical roots.

However the main focus of the renovation was to add a 2nd dining room which we creatively call "The New Room", an outdoor dining area open during the summer, and a new kitchen. Features of "The New Room" include a more modernistic, urban-industrial decor with an original brick wall and offers plenty of window seating.

The original dining room which we lovingly call "The Old Room" still remains and features hardwood floors and walls which are adorned with historical prints and photos that highlight the history of the building and of Wausau. Many of the photos date back to the early 1900's and late 1800's when Wausau was a logging town.

The 2nd floor features 3 private dining rooms of various sizes and includes a second kitchen.
